Today, on February 4th, we come together under the bright morning sun not just for a parade but to think about our history, enjoy the present, and dream about the future of our dear Sri Lanka. 76 years ago, on this day, our country received the wonderful gift of independence, breaking away from being controlled by other countries and becoming its own boss.

Many brave heroes made sacrifices to reach this special day. Some fought with swords against the rulers, and others used their smart minds and words. People like D.S. Senanayake, Anagarika Dharmapala, and Sirimavo Bandaranaike are remembered, but many more, both known and unknown, played a part in this fight. Today, we should remember them in our hearts and always be thankful for what they did.

But getting independence wasn’t just about raising a flag. It was the start of a promise – a promise to control our own future, make progress, and treat everyone equally. We promised to be in charge of our own stories and decide our path in the world.

For many years, we have worked hard to keep this promise. We have created a lively democracy, supported a free press, made sure our courts are independent, and allowed various ways for people to express their political thoughts. We have put a lot of effort into education and healthcare, helping our people be knowledgeable and healthy. Our rich culture, blending old traditions with new ideas, has been shown to the world.

However, our journey had difficulties. The marks of fights inside our country, natural disasters, and economic troubles still remind us of the hard times. We stumbled and faced divisions, but each time, we stood back up with strong determination, finding strength in our unity and shared history.

Today, as we stand on the edge of a new time, the problems from the past are still there. The world is changing, bringing uncertainty and new dangers. Economic differences might grow, the environment could be harmed, and we might face more problems in society.

But in these challenges, there is hope too. Our young people, full of talent and new ideas, can help us move forward. Our spirit for development is strong, and we are dedicated to making progress in a way that is good for the environment. We have a nation with a long history, a mix of people, and a big ability to face difficulties. These are the things we need to navigate the problems of the 21st century and create a better future for Sri Lanka.

So, fellow Sri Lankans, let this Independence Day not just be about celebrating the past but also a call to action for the future. Let’s promise again to work towards the ideas that helped us get our freedom: bringing people together, treating everyone equally, and always moving forward.

Let’s close the gaps that separate us, understanding and caring for each other. Let’s use the strength of our differences, seeing them not as weaknesses but as things that make our country strong.

Let’s turn our love for our island into meaningful actions. Let’s be active citizens, taking part in the democratic process, making sure our leaders do what’s right, and contributing to the well-being of everyone. Let’s become entrepreneurs, creators, and artists, making Sri Lanka known around the world.

Most importantly, let’s build a spirit of togetherness and openness, making sure no Sri Lankan is left behind as we move towards a better future. Let’s create a country where every child has the chance to do well, where every voice is heard, and where every dream can come true.

Remember, independence isn’t something you achieve once; it’s an ongoing effort. It’s always about working towards a society where fairness wins, opportunities are everywhere, and hope is bright for everyone.

On this 76th anniversary of our independence, let’s promise to protect this dream and shape this future. Let’s rise together, not as different groups, but as one strong nation, proud of our past, empowered by our present, and ready for the possibilities ahead.

May our Lion Flag keep flying high, a symbol of our freedom, strength, and unbreakable spirit. May Sri Lanka, united and full of life, shine its unique brightness to the world.

Thank you.
